Tecar therapy in Vinkeveen

An additional treatment modality within physiotherapy

Tecar is a form of radiofrequency therapy in which electrical energy is passed through body tissue in a controlled manner. It is also known as capacitive and resistive energy transfer. At Salbar Fysiotherapie, physiotherapist Boris Feldman uses Tecar solely as an additional intervention within a broader physiotherapy treatment plan. Tecar does not replace physiotherapy assessment, exercise therapy or rehabilitation.

What does Tecar feel like?

During treatment, an applicator is moved over the treatment area. Depending on the settings, you may feel a pleasant warmth. Treatment should be comfortable. The intensity is adjusted to:

  • the symptoms;
  • the treatment area;
  • sensitivity;
  • and the treatment goal.

What is the purpose of Tecar?

Tecar may be used when temporarily influencing:

  • pain;
  • local sensitivity;
  • comfort during movement;
  • or muscle tension

can help within the wider treatment programme. For example, a patient may find it easier to move or exercise after treatment. When this happens, I prefer to use that change immediately for active rehabilitation.

What does Tecar not do?

Tecar is sometimes presented online as a treatment that:

  • accelerates the regeneration of damaged tissue;
  • eliminates inflammation;
  • repairs collagen;
  • dramatically speeds up metabolism;
  • or cures almost every musculoskeletal condition.

There is insufficient convincing clinical evidence for such broad claims. I therefore do not use these explanations. Tecar is a tool, not a standalone healing mechanism.

For which symptoms can Tecar be used?

Depending on the assessment, Tecar may be considered as an additional intervention for certain musculoskeletal symptoms involving pain or limited movement. For example, some symptoms affecting the:

  • neck and shoulder;
  • the back;
  • muscles;
  • the hip;
  • the knee;
  • calf or ankle.

However, the presence of pain does not automatically make Tecar appropriate.

Tecar and exercise therapy

When Tecar temporarily leads to:

  • less pain;
  • easier movement;
  • or greater comfort when moving,

this may be a suitable opportunity to follow it with active exercise. For example: Tecar -> easier movement -> mobility -> strength -> functional training. This keeps treatment focused on restoring function.

No dependence on equipment

An important principle in my practice is that patients should not become dependent on equipment. If you only function better while repeatedly receiving Tecar, but your capacity to tolerate activity does not improve, we need to review the treatment critically. The ultimate goal remains the ability to move and tolerate loading independently.

What does scientific research say?

Some studies report positive effects of Tecar on pain and function. At the same time, the overall number of high-quality studies is limited, and studies vary considerably in:

  • diagnosis;
  • treatment settings;
  • duration;
  • combination with other therapies;
  • and the equipment used.

It is therefore currently unjustified to present Tecar as a proven superior treatment for musculoskeletal symptoms. At Salbar, I use the technique pragmatically: only when it demonstrably adds value for the individual patient.

How do I assess the effect?

Where possible, I compare a relevant movement or function before and after treatment. For example:

  • does the pain change?
  • can you move more easily?
  • does range of movement increase?
  • is an exercise easier to perform?

If there is no meaningful change, there is little reason to keep repeating the same treatment.

Tecar is part of physiotherapy

Depending on your situation, a course of treatment may also include:

  • exercise therapy;
  • strength training;
  • mobilisations;
  • IASTM;
  • taping;
  • neurodynamic techniques;
  • shockwave;
  • or other interventions.

Not everyone receives all these techniques. As little as possible, as much as necessary.
